Dave Garbera Book 2 launched in November

Dave Garbera Hull's Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2010 will have his second book out in time for Global Entrepreneurship Week (November 2010) . David attended Appleton Primary School, Kelvin Hall Senior High School and Wyke Sixth Form College in Hull, gaining 13 GCSEs and 5 A-Levels in the process. he is now at Liverpool University studying to be a Doctor.

This will be the second of Dave's books informing the reader of his enterprising journey.

His first book Smilers Part 1 From the Ashes charts the progress of KH Smilers, a Young Enterprise Company started by a group of eighteen Year 10 students - average age 14 - at Kelvin Hall School in Hull in 2003, is inspirational and aspirational in equal measure. It does not preach or pretend to have all the answers, but instead it delivers a very powerful message. Coming from Hull, or any other similar place labelled as 'a failure', is NOT a handicap to success or an excuse to give up. KH Smilers has proved that with motivation and determination anything is possible, and, in particular, that the worlds of business and academia should not be mutually exclusive.

Dave's second book is sponsored by Hull Training and just like the first one a percentage of the profits will be donated to the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank so it can continue to give financial support to the city's young people.

'Tireless, passionate' philanthropist and businessman Jack Brignall dies

Jack Brignall Chairman of the Wykeland Group, who received an MBE in June for his community has died. Jack was a great supporter of Hull's young people and I had the privilege of working with him on a number of projects . Jack gave a significant donation to the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank a few years ago  in order to support enterprising young people with connections to East Hull, as he felt that it was worth supporting our enterprising young people and taking the risk at investing in them. Jack will be sadly missed and the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership says many thanks and we will miss you Jack.

Charles Cracknell of the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership Secretariat said

" Jack was a great supporter of the city's young people and a gentleman who served the city with great distinction - I have known Jack for a number of years and was gob smacked when he gave a donation to the Youth Enterprise Bank he liked the idea of us taking a risk to enable young people live the dream and the fact we supported young entrepreneurs aged under 18"

"the sad thing is we never got chance to thank him further and had intended this year to award him the city's youth enterprise award during Global Entrepreneurship Week in November - however we will still salute his support for our enterprising young people"

Hull's new Enterprising People Programme

'Enterprising People' is an innovative new programme delivering world-class speakers with a twist. Bringing together the UK's youngest entrepreneurs, 'Enterprising People' provides a platform to share real life experiences of running and growing a business in this challenging economic climate.

All the enterprising people speakers have taken at least one or more enterprising ideas on a rollercoaster journey from concept to finished product. So whether you need a key note speech, school workshop, enterprise masterclass or an inspirational after dinner speech, 'Enterprising People' is the solution for you.

Dave, Richard, Amanda, Phil & Simon and Phil are the first of our young entreprenurs in Hull to sign up.

Dave has an enviable track record in setting up new businesses. Dave set up KH Smilers at ust 14 years old whilst attending Kelvin Hall School in Hull. They went on to win the Young Enterprise National Finals and their business is still running till this day. His recent venture, Garbera Enterprises, sees Dave track his enterprise journey over a trilogy of three books, the first of which was published in 2009 'Smilers.' Dave now studies medicine and Liverpool University, whilst running both businesses and was recently awarded 'Most Enterprise Student.' Dave is a legend in Hull's enterprise history and will leave no young person in any doubt that they can achieve if they set their mind to it.

Richard Myers was originally part of the young enterprise company KHSmilers with fellow entrepreneur Dave Garbera. Now Richard runs the successful web hosting company Hertz Web Solutions (HWS Hosting). Richard recently built the new http://www.hull-ready.co.uk/  website for the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership to showcase the fantastic work of  enterprising primary school pupils in the city.
Amanda Hartley is a vibrant young flower and fantastic role model to young women. Having established herself as a budding entrepreneur in her local business community, she embodies all the characteristics of a confident and enterprising individual, having recently won the Entrepreneur of the Year Award at Spotlight 2009. Her presentations include hands on floral demonstrations to practical masterclasses on running a simple but profitable business, a quirky showstopper delivered straight to your door.

Simon Long  and Phil Benson are two querky characters. Both ex students of Hull University, the two born entrepreneurs set up their business originally in the confines of the uni campus. This summer saw the pair open their first high street city centre shop in York, with great success! The lively duo can inspire even the grumpiest of teenagers, and they may even make you a drink while they talk.

Phil Batty began Force-7 in May 2006. Force-7 is run solely by 14-24 year olds and works with businesses and organisations to enable them to more effectively engage young people. Philip is an unusual character and a self-taught manager, with some unusual experiences to share he adds value to any classroom he enters.

Further endorsement - Global Entrepreneurship Week 2010 in Hull

We are pleased to have  received to following endorsement from one of Hull's most successful young entrepreneurs Dave Garbera the Managing Director of  KH Smilers Ltd and Garbera Enterprise Ltd who is also Hull's young entrepreneur of the year 2010.

Dave Garbera says

"As someone who has been running a business since 14 years of age and currently Hull’s Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2010, I am very proud to be associated with GEW for another year. It is the ideal vehicle for strengthening the bonds between business and education. Moreover, I strongly believe that such events not only help to foster an entrepreneurial spirit amongst all young people but also encourage school and college leavers to acquire the necessary skills to make them attractive propositions to any employer. Having said that, I am convinced that it does not always have to be a choice between business and education. I have proved that it is possible to successfully combine both. Here’s to many more GEWs in the future!”

Right On Rotherham!

Hull's  partners Rotherham Ready and Rotherham Youth Enterprise were voted the Most Enterprising Town in Yorkshire and the Humber, at the regional heats of the Enterprising Britain Competition. At the regional finals Rotherham were supported by a number of young people who pitched to a panel of seven judges - all from the private sector - in Leeds. We understand that they were all a credit to Rotherham and Yorkshire.

The panel of judges said they were 'blown away' by the presentation, which was 'professional and inspirational'. Being the regional winners of Enterprising Britain is a just reward for all the hard work, commitment and enthusiasm shown by literally hundreds of teachers, employers, business people, entrepreneurs and - of course - young people, across Rotherham and beyond, as we know in Hull after we won it last year, that professionalism is essential in the competition.

Dveloping a culture of enterprise is only possible when people from across the authority work together to make a difference, and show passion which we know is the most important ingredient. Hull wishes them well in the national finals, especially as they mentioned our partnership with them, as we did last year. So best wishes to Jackie and Catherine and their teams and to the young people of Rotherham. http://www.rotherhamready.org.uk/

The Badgers Sett Enterprise Challenge

Further endorsements - Global Entrepreneurship Week 2010 in Hull

"Being an entrepreneur can be daunting, exciting, exhausting and, if you're
successful, rewarding in equal measure. The excellent programme at the
Global Entrepreneurship Week 2010 in Hull will give young people the
information and inspiration to make their journey less daunting and more
likely to succeed. Good luck and remember to share the lessons you learn so
we can all be better entrepreneurs."

"During times of budget reductions and financial uncertainty entrepreneurship
is more important than ever, especially in Hull as we have a great number of budding young entrepreneurs. As a young entrepreneur myself I believe Global Entrepreneurship Week to be of great significance in helping nurture enterprising young people, giving them the advice and connections they need to start their own business."
Richard Myers
HWS Hosting

"Mail News & Media is once again proud to be a major supporter of Global Entrepreneurship week. As a business that has been at the heart of the
local community for over 125 years, we recognise the importance of young
people to the future of our city. Encouraging young people to be innovative, creative and passionate, whilst providing them with the skills and understanding of running a business is key to a talented and ambitious future workforce."
Richard Duxbury
Deputy Managing Director
Mail News & Media

" I recall a Business Education Day during Bizweek some years ago where
Simon Woodruffe, creator of the "YO" brand (as in Yo Sushi") was      trying, and succeeding, in inspiring a group of young students. He pointed out
that when he stands in a classroom in China and asks the question "How many of you would like to start your own company ?", almost every hand went up. In the UK the same question prompted a very poor response. In Hull this is changing and all thanks to events like "Global Entrepreneurship Week". I am continually astounded by the talent we have in our young people. The city has an exemplary track record in achievement and we in the business sector must continue to support and encourage our young entrepreneurs in every way that we can. They are our future ! "
