Hull's Global Challenge

It's nearly Global Entrepreneurship Week 2010, and Hull is throwing down the gauntlet to the creative minds across the globe.

We're asking young people everywhere to express their experience and understanding of the word 'enterprise' through a unique logo of their design.

2) Logos must be submitted in electronic format (preferably JPEG or EPS) via email to charles.cracknell@hullcc.gov.uk

3) Designs should not include any offensive... language or content that might be perceived as rude.

4) All entries must be received by no later than midnight on Monday 22nd November 2009

All entrants must be aged 25 and under (entrants under 16 years old, must name a responsible adult)

Entries will be judged by a panel of entrepreneurs and the prize is £200 for the winning logo overall to develop an enterprising idea. The winning logo overall will be used to promote enterprise activity in Hull throughout 2011.

Last years winners came from Macedonia, Great Yarmouth and Yorkshire. Please encourage any young person to enter.

Good luck, get creative and dare to dream dangerously!

Hull's Badgers Sett Enterprise Challenge

Hull's Badgers Sett Enterprise Challenge has identified 21 entries that will be interviewed  from applicants ranging from aged 6 to 21. I do think for its first year the Badgers Sett Enterprise Challenge has proved to be successful so far. To think the winners of each section will get to face Hull's answer to Lord Sugar our very own Ruth Badger

Excitement Mounts at the Fourth Blossom Event

All attention was focussed on what the schools taking part in the fourth round of the Make £5 Blossom scheme will do with the £150 loaned to them when they attended the launch event in October at the Guildhall. The fourth round of this challenging scheme saw ten primary schools and ten local businesses meet for the first time in October to discuss their collaboration. At the launch, contact details, a formal contract and the all important £150 loan was exchanged between each school and their business partner. The months leading up to the February celebration in 2011 will see the business investors’ act as mentors for their respective school partners. They will be invited to the school on a regular basis to see what ideas the children have come up with to make a profit on the loan and help them with their ideas.

“The enthusiasm shown by the children involved with this element of Hull Ready is great to see.” commented Hull’s Youth Enterprise Manager Charles Cracknell. “The children benefit by having to use their enterprising skills to the limit whilst the businesses feel inspired by the pupil’s creativity and the satisfaction of seeing their initial investment help develop the young people’s ideas.”

This round again is supported by St Stephen’s, Hull City Council, Hull Truck, Rotherham Ready and Hull’s Youth Enterprise Bank, and will see the children develop a wide range of enterprising activity. All will be hoping that their idea is lucrative enough to allow them to pay back the loans and leave a tidy profit on top for the school so watch this space!!

The ten schools and businesses involved this time around are:

• Cavendish &  KC

• St Andrews &  St Stephens

• Neasden &  PLW Company

• Brandesburton &  PWC

• Endsleigh &  KC

• St Richards & Co-operative

• Bricknell & Golding Computer Services

• Maybury & KFM Recruitment

• Griffin & Mail News & Media

• Gillshill &  Simply Gardening

Co-operative sponsor for Global Entrepreneurship Week

With just over three weeks to go until Global Entrepreneurship Week 2010, Hull City Council has attracted support from another big organisation. The UK's fifth largest retailer and banker, the Co-operative Group, have signed up to be a platinum sponsor and will part fund two events during the week in November. This includes the primary school event and an enterprise masterclass for over 16s.

Len Wardle, Chair of the Co-operative, who will attend events during the week, said:

"The Co-operative Group is delighted to sponsor and support this exciting initiative in Hull. The society and its family of businesses has a long association with enterprise around the world and hopes that Global Entrepreneurship Week in Hull is a great success, especially as more and more young people are considering the co-operative model of business.

"As part of our support to youth enterprise in Hull, there is also the opportunity for us to get involved with the local community. Our staff are planning on going out into schools with the Hull Ready Team to meet children and young people, which will be really rewarding for them as well as linking to Andrew Marvell School which is supported by the society."

The council is working with Force-7 to deliver a week full of enterprising events for children and young people across the city from 15 - 19 November. The week is all about embracing innovation, imagination and creativity. It showcases enterprise and opens up new opportunities for young people across Hull, the UK and the world. Already Global Entrepreneurship Week 2010 has secured financial support from a range of companies and organisations, including St Stephen’s shopping centre.

Maureen Foers OBE, Yorkshire's Women's Enterprise Champion and Chair of Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership said:

“We are delighted that the Co-operative has come onboard to support this exciting week to show how enterprising our young people are. Their support will enable us to bring the aims of the co-operative movement to young people.

“The support of the Co-operative clearly demonstrates that Hull is able to attract, because of its status as Europe's second most enterprising place, people who want to help its enterprising young people to dream dangerously.”

Dave invests in future young entreprenurs in Hull

One of Hull's most successful young entrepreneurs, David Garbera, hosted a book launch yesterday night. Mr Garbera has published his second book, Smilers Book Two: Lessons In Enterprise which features his story about setting up his successful business KH Smilers. The book contains a number of tips for young entrepreneurs hoping to follow in his footsteps. Dave set up KH Smilers as a young enterprise company while he was a student at Kelvin Hall School in Hull.

Whilst studying at Wyke College he turned KH Smilers into a limited company and then whilst studying medicine at the University of Liverpool he set up Garbera Enterprise.

Last year, in the Spotlight Awards, he won the title of Young Entrepreneur Of The Year. Most recently, Mr Garbera has been shortlisted for the Mail News & Media Business Awards 2010 for Outstanding Young Achiever in Education & Business Award.

He is donating £1,000 towards the Youth Enterprise Bank and Global Entreprenurship Week in order to give something back to the fund which allowed him to develop his business when he was only 17 and to promote enterprise to young people in the city.

New platinum sponsor for Global Entrepreneurship Week

With just over five weeks to go until Global Entrepreneurship Week in Hull, the organisers have attracted support from St Stephen's shopping centre, which has become a platinum sponsor for the event.  Hull City Council is working with Force-7 to deliver a week full of enterprising events for children and young people across the city from 15 - 21 November.

St Stephen's sponsorship will go towards an event for primary school age pupils to celebrate the Make £5 Blossom scheme, as well as a competition for youngsters to enter their logo designs via Facebook.

Lucy Stabler, Account Director at Force-7, said:

"We are delighted that St Stephen's has come on board to support this exciting week to show how enterprising our young people are. Their support means that the total raised is up to £40,000, which will enable us to put on a range of different events and attract a number of high profile speakers to the week."

Jim Harris, Centre Manager, St Stephen's, said:

"We have been involved with youth enterprise in Hull for the last three years and are really impressed with everything that the team does. There are lots of different opportunities available for young people in Hull and we decided that this year we wanted to become a major sponsor.

"There is also the chance for us to get involved with the local community and our staff have been going out into schools to meet children and young people, which is really rewarding for them."

Global Entrepreneurship Week is all about embracing innovation, imagination and creativity. It showcases enterprise and opens up new opportunities for young people across Hull, the UK and the world.

Dave Garbera, Hull's Young Entrepreneur of the Year 2010, said:

"Attracting support from a range of local businesses is great news for raising the profile of Global Entrepreneurship Week in Hull. It clearly demonstrates that Hull is able to put on a series of activities that is second to none. Hull truly is striving to be a place where entrepreneurs like me are celebrated and recognised as a driving force in our economy, and that our young people play an important part in that."

If any other companies would like to get involved in the week or can offer any sponsorship please contact Charles Cracknell on 612 983.
