The Co-operative has joined forces with Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership to launch a week of local activities to mark this year’s Global Entrepreneurship Week (14 – 18 November).

Last year’s event saw 2,000 young people take part in activities across Hull, or at their school or college, and this year promises to be even bigger and better.

Activity will include a series of activities held at The Guildhall, including an “Environmental Enterprise Challenge” and a “Hull Ready Celebration”. Students can also get newsroom-ready with media training classes run by the Hull Daily Mail, or enjoy a series of enterprise master classes, tailored for different age groups.

Former stars of BBC TV’s The Apprentice, Ruth Badger and Claire Young, will be joining some of the week’s events to advise and inspire the region’s entrepreneurs of tomorrow, along with local young business success story, Sarah Longthorn, Managing Director of Wedgewelly.

Steven Bayes, Co-operative East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire Committee member, said: "Global Entrepreneurship Week is a great opportunity for young people in Hull to develop their enterprising ideas and learn new skills. As a Co-operative we want to invest in the future of our city and encourage young people to set up their own businesses, to grow Hull's economy and attract further investment that is why we have given the organisers £3,000 towards the cost of the week.

“We know that we have lots of talented youngsters in the city and I am looking forward to meeting some of them”.

Guest speaker, Ruth Badger, said: "I love visiting Hull as it is an enterprising city and I really enjoy sharing my journey with budding young entrepreneurs who really want to make a difference in the business world.”

“Last year I was delighted to become a Patron of the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership and to support its activities that support Hull’s enterprising young people to ‘dream dangerously’. There is no doubt the city of Hull is doing a great deal to support its enterprising young people. I am proud to see that Hull’s activities to support this important Week and other enterprising activities go from strength to strength and I look forward to addressing the delegates and young people this year.”

I have enjoyed the day I have never been to Newcastle so it was a new experience for me. I have learnt was goes into making an app.

I have learnt to work as a team and to put together an organised presentation. I have also learnt that having to explain to judges about our app wasn’t that embarrassing.

Today I learnt how to design a new product and how to work as a team.

I think that today was a very enjoyable day. I liked looking around the stadium meeting new people and taking part in the challenge. Overall I had a great day.

I have a learnt today that if you put all of your ideas together you can create something also to work in a team well and don’t get shy be confident.

I have learnt how to put my ideas together with other people and how to design an app.

Today I feel I have learnt how to work better as a group and how to design a product to high expectations.

I have learnt how to work as a team and how to think about things I wouldn’t normally think about.

I have learnt how to work in a team and talking to new people whilst having fun. I have also learnt how to explore my imagination and making an app.

Today was very good I had a really fun day and wood definitely do it again.

Today I have learnt a lot. I have learnt how to work better in groups and how to be patient when working with other people.

Today I have learnt it’s not always about winning and to work with people who I wouldn’t normally work with.

Malet Lambert School attends the MADE Enterprise and Entrepreneurship Festival

On Thursday 22nd September 25 Year 9 students from Malet Lambert School attended the MADE Festival in Sheffield at the invitation of Claire Young and Hull Training. Students had the opportunity to listen to a variety of business leaders including Vince Cable MP Secreatary of State for Business Innovation and Skills , Claire Young and Peter Jones from Dragons Den.

Students reflections from the day:

I have learnt that to be successful not to give up. That you can be what you want to be no matter what it is. Take little steps at a time, don’t give up.

I have learnt what inspired some of the most successful people in the Business Industry. I learnt that if you try hard at something it may give you a better life in the future. Also I have learnt that business’s start out in a lot of weird ways. I met some successful business people aged 16/17 who have some of their own business’s.

I would like to say a big thank you to all of the Entrepreneurs and I am very grateful towards Claire Young who made it possible for Malet Lambert to attend the event.
I think that overall it was a good day. I especially enjoyed Peter Jones and Emma Harrison’s speech, as they were funny, interesting and inspirational.
