10th Anniversary Global Entrepreneurship Week in Hull

The 10th Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) takes place from 13 to 17 November and Hull will host seven major events to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs in the city. Hull will also be the launch of the national campaign for Global Entrepreneurship Week as it celebrates its 10^th Anniversary.

Hull City Council, in partnership with Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership, have organised seven major events to inspire, connect and engage the next generation of entrepreneurs in Hull. The city will host former BBC  Adam Corbally and Antony Chesworth of founder EKM Systems, as well as young entrepreneurs Aaron Conroy of Fenburg who use to be homeless, Eve Lodge of Get Barmy Bunting who is still at University and  Evie Sharp of Peaches & Dreams who runs her children’s clothing business from home. Ross Bennett MD of Engaging Education will be the MC.

Global Entrepreneurship Week in Hull will be sponsored by a number of small and large private, public and charitable organisations including: Sangwin Group, Hull City Council, John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank, RB, Primary TEC, Future Works Yorkshire, Hull College, University of Hull Two Ridings Community Foundation, Hull Training, Swift Group, KCOM, Green Port, University of Hull, Hull Humber Chamber of Commerce, GH Events, Engaging Education, T Arran Photography, Humber LEP, Oak Consult, Hull College and Future Works Yorkshire and DLB Events.

Hull is putting its weight behind GEW for the tenth year and are proud to be the host city for the launch of Global Entrepreneurship Week in order to show how enterprising its young people are and throughout November the city will host over 20 events and activities relating to entrepreneurship across many of our schools and colleges.

This November, the Global Entrepreneurship Week celebrates its tenth anniversary, over the 10 years Hull has played a significant part in these celebrations and that is why this year as the UK’s Most Enterprising Place 2017 and the fact that it’s the City of Culture – Hull’s first event of the week will be the official launch of Global Entrepreneurship Week 2017

This year GEW also sees the official launch of the Global Entrepreneurship Network (GENUK) – a brand new platform and group of initiatives to help the UK enterprise ecosystem take advantage of this vast network of opportunity and bring the full power of the world’s preeminent entrepreneurship community to bear in support of the UK economy and Hull is taking advantage of that by been invited to the Start up Nations Summit in Estonia.

In 2005 the UK hosted the very first Enterprise Week and gave life to a movement that would sweep the world and Hull was part of that .  In 2007 18 nations joined the UK in committing to host a simultaneous celebration of entrepreneurship each November. By 2008, host organisations in 77 countries had officially signed on—and 3 million people participated in 25,022 events and activities. Today the GEW campaign is the centrepiece of a sophisticated and comprehensive effort to connect people and resources together to create new opportunities and power a unique, open source ecosystem platform, called the Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN).

GEN engages entrepreneurs, investors, policymakers, researchers, support organizations and others collaborating to advance economic growth and innovation in more than 170 countries around the world.  GEN UK is geared towards collaboration and impact at scale and is designed to help better understand, connect and grow the UK’s small business ecosystem

 At the most fundamental level, GENUK links entrepreneurs and the institutions which support them together. Once established, GENUK connects this unified ecosystem to an international peer community operating at the cutting edge of ecosystem development. GENUK is about creating jobs and strengthening economic stability at a global and national and community level. – More on that in a later, longer post.

This November Roughly 35,000 events and competitions will take place during #GEW2017—connecting millions of participants to potential collaborators, mentors, and even investors. Dozens of world leaders on every continent and a network of more than 15,000 partner organizations support the initiative every year – in the UK we’re expanding our Compass Partners network.

Global Entrepreneurship Week provides a perfect opportunity for UK business to expand their reach to new audiences from all parts of their ecosystem and foster connections and resources at the global level.

Events in Hull in Global Entrepreneurship Week.

Monday 13^th November Make £5 Blossom event where 16 schools will meet up with 16 businesses in order to start a three month programme in which young people receive a loan of £150 from their business partner and get the chance to make it grow through a range of money making activities. This event will also be part of the national launch of Global Entrepreneurship Week. At the end of the period the profits made from business loans will be split between the school and Action Duchenne which is this year's charity.

Tuesday 14^th November  sponsored by KCOM this event will be a Google Hangout with Hull’s partners the Hook up Dinner in Johannesburg  South Africa, at this small event young entrepreneurs from Hull and those that support them will get the chance to talk to colleagues about the different and similar challenges they face in South Africa,, we try to make this as interactive as possible.

Tuesday 14^th November - #THUDYorkshire at this event five young people wanting to go into business will pitch to an invited audience for investment in their business from the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank of up to £500 and from the audience itself.

Wednesday 15^th November - Post 16 Event, this will involve 200 young people from a range of colleges and schools, as well as apprentice providers with former BBC Apprentice Adam Corbally and young entrepreneurs at this event. At this event the young people will be set a business challenge around developing a new caravan for the Swift Group. The young people will be competing for prizes ranging from £100 to £250 for their teams.

Thursday 16^th November - Secondary School Event, 9:30am till 3pm including lunch. This will involve 200 young people from a range of colleges and schools as well as apprentice providers with former BBC Apprentice Adam Corbally, Antony Chesworth Founder of EKM Systems. At this event the young people will be set a business challenge around developing an event at KCOM Craven Park for the Sangwin Group. The young people will be competing for prizes ranging from £100 to £250 for their teams.

Friday 17^th November Primary Event 9:30am till 2:30pm. This will involve 200 young people from primary schools, at this event the young people will take part in a challenge focusing on KCOM Craven Park as a central venue – exploring innovative ideas and uses. The young people will be competing for prizes ranging from £100 to £250 for their teams.

Friday 17^th November - Annual Celebration and Awards Evening at KCOM Craven Park in which 10 youth enterprise awards including The Maxwell Bird Most Enterprising School, the  Kevin McNamara Most Enterprising Teacher and the Sheila Waudby Young Entrepreneur of the Year will be given out by the Lord Mayor of Hull and Chair Ryedale Council with Emma Hardy MP and all funds raised at the evening will go to Action Duchenne.

Nomination Charles Cracknell Start up Nations Award

The Global Entrepreneurship Network announced four finalists for the Startup Nations Award for Local Policy Leadership. The award recognizes public sector achievement at the local level in championing innovative policies or programs that advance new and young firm formation. The award is one of three Startup Nations Awards that will be presented at the Startup Nations Summit on Tuesday, November 21 in Estonia.

The other two Startup Nations Awards are Groundbreaking Policy Thinking and National Policy Leadership. This year, the four finalists for the Local Policy Leadership Award hail from four different countries, and have contributed to their community as a startup champion through a variety of initiatives ranging from ecosystem coordination and collaboration, to promoting entrepreneurship education and innovative skills building in local communities.

The Selection Committee evaluated nominations based on the following criteria:

The winner will be the third recipient of the award, which was previously received by Bart De Wever, mayor of Antwerp, Belgium, and María José Vengoechea, executive president of the Barranquilla Chamber of Commerce in Colombia.

Former Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Mining, Province of Cordoba

Mr. Lawson designed and implemented a plethora of programs and policies during his time as a regional policy leader in the Province of Cordoba, all with a vision to build an ecosystem that can continue to develop, well-past government support. He instituted the Province’s SME and Entrepreneurial Development Secretariat. His legacy proved to be self-sustainable, as ecosystem coordination and collaboration continues via the “Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Córdoba,” an entity that he formed in 2012 with 65 different organizations with legal capacity. Mr. Lawson’s vision allowed the Province to more effectively address capacity building gaps across different types of business: traditional, new, young, and high-growth.

Frank Aguirre
Business Development Manager, Office of Los Angeles Mayor
United States 

Mr. Aguirre is a collaboration-oriented public official who created synergies between the local and the national policy efforts to support entrepreneurs. Most recently, he successfully led the City of Los Angeles proposal in response to the Start Up in a Day “Dream-Big” competition, which was launched at the national level by the United States Small Business Administration. The City proposed an open-source web portal to help streamline the process through which business owners apply for permits. The idea won the top prize of $250,000, which will help L.A. launch the portal within a year, as announced by Mayor Eric Garcetti. The portal will be open-source so other cities can replicate it free of charge.

Rebecca Palmer
Member, Barrie/Simcoe Entrepreneurial Ecosystem Committee
Canada

Ms. Palmer has focused on access to skills by providing entrepreneurial education, workshops and events to youth aged 10-24, many of which in collaboration with the local government authorities, particularly in the Simcoe county. Ms. Palmer works closely with the City of Barrie to help develop the city's approach to entrepreneurship, as well as with other ecosystem actors like Georgian College's Entrepreneurial Advisory Board. She is also currently working on developing a new microloan program that provide access to capital to youth under the age of 19, and as such continues to test programs that could be then scaled by public sector agencies.

Charles Cracknell, 
Youth Enterprise Manager, Hull City Council
United Kingdom

Charles was an elected representative on Humberside County Council and Hull City Council and championed the aspirations of young people. Mr. Cracknell brought to the city-level public sector the voice of young entrepreneurs, having devoted years as a grassroots advocate for enterprising youth. He has established a range of enterprise education and youth entrepreneurship programs in the City of Hull. Mr. Cracknell  established the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank www.youthenterprise.co.ukwho are launching new ventures in the fields of science, engineering, technology and healthcare. This policy tool provides them with seed funds along with mentorship.

Hull Youth Enterprise Awards 2017

Over 50 nominations for individuals and organisations have been submitted for the Hull Youth Enterprise Awards 2017,.

The awards are organised Hull City Council, in partnership with the John Cracknel Youth Enterprise Bank and local businesses, that recognise how enterprising our young people are and recognises those that support enterprising young people. A panel has now shortlisted in each of the categories.

This year’s awards winners will be announced by the Lord Mayor of Hull Councillor John Hewitt and Adam Corbally former BBC Apprentice Candidate in Global Entrepreneurship Week at Craven Park in November.

Tony Robinson OBE set to be Patron John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank

The nationally recognised John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank is delighted to announce that Tony Robinson OBE of Enterprise Rockers and Micro Business Champion, has agreed to be its Patron in supporting the enterprising young people of Hull, East Riding, Ryedale and Scarborough. As Patron, Tony will be the face of the bank and its work at regional and national levels as well as helping it to secure further support from the business community for its bondholder and mentoring scheme.

Tony and all his family are from East and West Hull. He lived in Hessle and went to Beverley Grammar School and was proud to play cricket and tennis at Hull YPI and more importantly, have a season ticket to watch Waggy at Boothferry Park (he's very old). 

Tony is known nationally and internationally as the Micro Business Champion. Tony has been running his own business, with Clare Francis, for over 30 years. He started championing the skills, know-how and eco system, that those starting their own business need to survive and thrive. In 1996, a Government contract to describe the competences needed by those starting a business and those advising them led to him founding the SFEDI Group (which includes the Institute of Enterprise and Entrepreneurship) to raise the quality of enterprise learning and support. 

In January 2012 he founded, with Tina Boden, the indie, free, informal, no contact details required, Enterprise Rockers CIC to make life better for micro (0-9 employees) business owners everywhere. They run the annual, global #MicroBizMattersDay which the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank supports. The 4th #MicroBizMattersDay takes place on January 12th 2018 broadcasting live from Manchester.   

Most of Tony's work and campaigns to back micro enterprise has been self-funded - unpaid and voluntary. This includes being a Director of the Centre for Enterprise, Director of Yorkshire in Business (the Yorkshire Coast Enterprise Agency), Vice President of the National Federation of Enterprise Agencies (now NEN), Vice President of ISBE and Investors in People Small Business Champion. His 20 year campaign that all organisations that Government buy from, fund or licence should #PayIn30Days all their bills found its way into the Labour Party manifesto at the last General Election. 

Tony was awarded an OBE for small firms and training and is the recipient of 2 Lifetime Achievement Awards for his contribution to Entrepreneurship (from the IAB and Start Your Business Magazine). He regularly appears in the Top 100 Influencers in the UK on Entrepreneurship. He is currently on a never ending (he hopes) tour with his one hour, one man 'Micro Is Magic' show based on his best-selling fictional satire 'Freedom from Bosses Forever'. 

John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank:

The John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank is for young people who live in Hull, East Riding and the towns of Malton, Norton on Derwent, Pickering in Ryedale and the town of Scarborough, aged up to and including 21 years old. It offers grants of up to £1,000 for individuals or groups of young people who need finance to help make their idea happen. (More funding will be considered in exceptional circumstances). The idea should benefit other people or help the applicant develop an enterprising idea.

The Youth Enterprise Bank (YEB) is not just about giving financial support, it also offers practical help with developing your business idea. The Youth Enterprise Bank is managed by a group of trustees, and linked to the Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership.

To-date over 400 young people from Hull have benefited from this source of funding, buying items such as: Computers, Business Stationery, Websites, Photography Equipment, Bicycle Repair Equipment, Chocolate Making Equipment, Dance costumes for local bands, equipment for mobile hairdressers and much more.

In 2015 the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank won Enterprising Britain and was a runner up in the European Enterprise Promotion Awards and in 2017 won best social enterprise in the East Coast Chamber Awards.

Nominations are now open for Hull Youth Enterprise Awards 2017 that recognise Hull's enterprising schools and businesses. The awards recognise Hull's enterprising schools and businesses and are organised by Hull City Council in partnership with the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank.

The awards are sponsored by local businesses and organisations from across the city. This year's award winners will be announced in Global Entrepreneurship in November.

Winners will be invited to receive their award at the celebration event on Friday 17 November at Craven Park as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week. The winning schools will receive an engraved plaque and £200 to further develop enterprise activity.

Make £5 Blossom - Round 14

Hull City Council’s Make £5 Blossom project will be holding its 14th end celebration event sponsored by the John Cracknell Youth Enterprise Bank at the Guildhall on April 26^th the and will see primary and secondary school pupils, sharing their enterprising journeys of how they used a loan they received from their business partners to hopefully make a profit. The only boundaries set for the young people was that their ideas would need to have an element of involving the promotion of Hull as the City of Culture, other than that they could be as enterprising as they wanted. The pupils at Craven Primary Academy produced Hull themed badges working with KCOM’s Community Manager Brendon Smurthwaite, whilst Wansbeck Primary held a musical evening, a number of the enterprising pupils held Christmas and Easer Fairs whilst Gillshill Primary designed and created Hull themed shopping bags.

Each group of young people were given a loan of £150 in November 2015 as part of Global Entrepreneurship Week from their business partner and have had to show their entrepreneurial spirit whilst using the Big 13 Enterprise Skills to hopefully make a profit, this will then be shared between our enterprising young people, our charity of the year Action Duchenne www.actionduchenne.org which is the most common fatal genetic disorder diagnosed in childhood, affecting approximately 1 in every 3,500 live male births (around 2500 people have DMD in the UK) and the Be Enterprising Group of practitioners.

Involvement in this round has included Mersey Primary/ Estcourt Primaries with AB Rooms, Woodlands Primary with  AA Global, Tweendykes with Netopian, Griffin Primary with Inspireignite, Wansbeck with Daniel Barker Music,St Marys College with Swift Group, Biggin Hill Primary with St Stephen’s Shopping Centre, Buckingham Prmary with  Pepperell’s Solicitors, Gillshill Primary with Active Humber, Francis Askew Primary and Courage Queen,Priory Primary and 360 Accountants and Craven Primary Academy with KCOM.

"As a teacher and musician it has been fantastic working with such a great team of young people from Wansbeck, they have all shown great enthusiasm in getting the project going, taking a good idea and turning it into a great business opportunity. I think with a little more time they will continue to flourish …. And who knows where the enterprising pupils I have worked with could end up”

As part of £5 Blossom pupils learn about the Big 13 Enterprise Skills Negotiating and Influencing, Risk Management, Effective Communication, Positive Attitude, Leadership, Product Service and Design, Organising and Planning, Problem Solving, Making Ethical Decisions, Financial Literacy, Team Work, Creativity and Innovation and using your Initiative  

In the previous rounds schools in Hull have worked with over 120 different businesses and the pupils have made £1000’s in profit and over 4000 pupils have been involved.

#THUDYorkshire From South Africa to Hull

On 20^thJanuary 2017 at Furley & Co from 5.30pm till 8.30pm as part of 2017 Hull City of Culture Celebrations and to mark the official launch of The Hook-Up Dinner Yorkshire (an international networking group founded in South Africa) for young entrepreneurs. The Hull based young entrepreneurs Thomas Arran and Kit Hargreaves have brought the concept of the Hook up Dinner to Hull from South Africa after they visited South Africa last year to meet young entrepreneurs and will act as joint Chairs of #THUDYorkshire

The first event will be attended by young entrepreneurs from Hull and North Yorkshire as well as Selebogo Molefe CEO - Lifesgud Global Investments (Pty) Ltd founder of Hook up Dinner movement who will talking about the Entrepreneurial Ecosystem in South Africa and the similarities with Hull and the coordinator of the HOOK up Dinner in Zimbabwe Constantine Nyanzero, who will be speaking about Entrepreneurial Ecosystem in Zimbabwe.

This was an eye-opening trip that really demonstrated to us that the challenges faced by young people, whilst on different scales, both in life and in business are not all that different. This is what THUD Yorkshire is about - it's about using every available opportunity, every available strategy and initiative to create a environment where young people can thrive."

#THUDYorkshire is a new initiative that brings the passion, dedication and hugely successful model of the Hook Up Dinner to young people in the UK. It began after a trip to South Africa by young entrepreneurs. While they were there, the young people saw how even thousands of miles away, the same issues were faced by young enterprising people there as in the UK. As a result on their return, they decided to set up a similar initiative in Hull and Yorkshire. #THUDYorkshire will be holding monthly meetings to encourage discussion and facilitate connections between young people to help everyone grow

#MicroBizMattersDay on Friday 13th January

KCOM, Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership and Hull City Council will be taking part in the third annual #MicroBizMattersDay on Friday 13^th  January to celebrate the contribution made by micro businesses to the UK economy. #MicroBizMattersDay takes place everywhere in the world and any which way anyone chooses. January 13th is about at least 13 minutes of actions – online and offline – on the ground, in the air and on the sea. There are no rules and borders in enterprise.

As part of the day, micro businesses across the UK are being encouraged to give 13 minutes of their time to support to other micro businesses, and in Hull the JCYEB in partnership  with KCOM has agreed to host an event in Hull

The video will be used on the day as part of the Enterprising Young People hour where the city's young entrepreneurs will be giving one minute tips to aspiring young people on youth entrepreneurship and the Big 13 Enterprise Skills.

The three main areas of focus for #IGave13 minutes of action to help other micro enterprise owners are Customers, Cash flow and Confidence.

Ross Bennett, Chair Hull Youth Enterprise Partnership, said: 

"Young people who set up a business are just like any other person, however, often they are not taken seriously by larger organisations and businesses, and like all micro businesses they are playing a vital role in reviving the economy. 

"Britain's micro businesses in general and younger entrepreneurs in particular are almost twice as optimistic about the future growth of their business compared to older peers. 

"In a nutshell it's not always about high growth and expansion for young people, it's about enjoying what they are doing and many are wanting to put back into their community, not because it's the trendy thing to do but because it's the right thing to do and for that reason I am pleased that so many young people are making a contribution to #MicroBizMattersDay." 

Further Information

1.      Although, most countries are seeing record numbers of self-employed and micro enterprise owners (in the UK, for example 95% of all businesses are micro enterprise – 5 million) it is getting tougher to earn a reasonable living. In many countries the behaviour of national, regional and local government, alongside some large organisations, makes it an uphill struggle. (In the UK 1 in 7 of the workforce are self-employed but are earning 20% less than in 2008).

2.     The annual, global #MicroBizMattersDay shows the world the massive contribution independent business owners and the self-employed make to the global economy, job creation and community. We call this combined power of micro enterprise owners the #PowerOfPlenty. #MicroBizMattersDay of actions is primarily for these people – the #PowerOfPlenty. But on #MicroBizMattersDay everyone can play and do something to support micro enterprise.

3.     Since January 9th 2012 the free-to-join-in Enterprise Rockers (@MicroBizMatters) movement has been building the #PowerOfPlenty. British co-founders and co-funders of the Enterprise Rockers, Tina and Tony, along with Band Promoters (individuals) and Friends of the Rockers (organisations with networks of micro enterprise owners) have been increasing their reach around the world, through social media.The Enterprise Rockers movement has achieved a great deal to make life better for micro enterprise owners but much more can be achieved by hundreds of thousands of people, millions potentially, giving thirteen minutes of positive, helpful actions on January 13th 2017

4.     January 13th 2016 is the third, global, annual #MicroBizMattersDay of actions. Everyone is asked to give at least 13 minutes, day or night, to make life better for micro enterprise (0-9 employees) owners everywhere.
